A well-known House Republican presented FBI Director Chris Wray with a subpoena on Wednesday, demanding access to documents reportedly relating to President Joe Biden and his family. The spokesperson claimed that an unnamed whistleblower had informed Congress about current allegations on the basis of which the request was made.
The latest in a string of "unfounded, unproven" political accusations made against Biden by Republicans, according to the White House, who have been "floating anonymous innuendo."
James Comer of Kentucky is trying to locate a particular FBI report from June 2020 that details conversations or interactions with a secret source. Comer is the head of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, a Republican, and Comer wrote to Wray stating that "it has come to our attention" that the bureau has a document that "describes an alleged criminal scheme" involving Biden and a foreign national "relating to the exchange of money for policy decisions" when Biden was vice president and includes "a precise description" about it.
The subpoena requests all purported FD-1023 forms, including any attachments and supporting records.
The legislators used the word "alleged" three times in the letter's opening paragraph but did not offer any evidence to support their assertions or any details on what they called "highly credible unclassified whistleblower disclosures."
Comer and Grassley said that those "disclosures" warrant more research. If the FBI did its own investigation, they want to know what conclusions were reached.
The White House claims that the subpoena is yet more evidence of how congressional Republicans have long "been lob[bing] unfounded, unproven, politically motivated attacks" against the Bidens "without offering evidence for their claims or evidence of decisions that were influenced by anything other than U.S. interests."
By making a total of 25 years' worth of tax returns available to the public, Biden "has offered an unprecedented level of transparency" regarding his personal finances, according to Ian Sams, a spokesman for the White House.
The FBI and Justice Department acknowledged receiving the subpoena but declined to comment further. Private attorneys for the president declined to comment.
Republicans claim that in recent years, they have acquired evidence that refutes the claim that Joe Biden and his family have used their public positions for personal gain.
The Republicans have actively investigated Joe and Hunter Biden's business dealings, particularly their overseas payments and other financial concerns, since regaining control of the House. Since January, Comer has gathered hundreds of pages of financial information about the Biden family by serving subpoenas at the Treasury Department and various financial institutions.
Comer has not yet disclosed a lot of information regarding the findings of his inquiry. In a recent statement, Comer claimed that a deal involving the Biden family produced over $1 million in profit in more than 15 incremental payments from a Chinese firm through a third party.
The FBI and Justice Department have both been accused by Comer and Grassley of hindering their investigations and politicising the agency's protracted investigation of Hunter Biden's financial transactions.
An IRS special agent requested whistleblower protections from Congress last month to report a "failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest in the ultimate disposition" of a criminal investigation involving the younger Biden's taxes and whether he lied about buying a gun.
